Featured Artist: Hagar Vardimon-van Heummen

Amsterdam-based artist and designer, Hagar Vardimon-van Heummen, touches on her own memories to create visual dialogue through found photographs and carefully placed threads.

With photographs being the basic foundation of Hagar’s artwork, she rarely begins with a blank canvas. Instead, she prefers to converse visually with a current dialogue, and undertakes a journey of depth, layers and meaning through existing imagery and embroidery.

As she threads an image, she cleverly stitches together across time – between past and present; she seeks to weave a new story through the process of creating anchors and connecting lines, thereby changing the character of both the photograph and the space it occupies.

For the last few years, Hagar has been making commissioned work for several magazines, as well as an array of gallery exhibitions throughout Europe and the United States. Most recently, she was featured in ‘The Embroidered Image’ at Robert Mann Gallery in New York.

Photographs are the basic foundation of my art.
