[OFFF16] Multi-disciplinary designer, illustrator and writer Gavin Strange
Gavin Strange is a multi-disciplinary senior designer at UK-based animation studio, Aardman Animations, and established his side-project studio, JamFactory, in 2001.
Over the course of his career, Gavin Strange has worked on personal and commercial projects encompassing everything from branding to web design, animation, film, product design, illustration, sculpture, and anything else that catches his fancy.
Ahead of his turn on stage at OFFF16 later this week, Gav spoke to The Great Discontent about his unpredictable journey from his early years as a junior designer in Bristol through to his current role at Aardman and his plethora of side projects which inspire his everyday, touching on his newly released book Do Fly.
Over time, I also became interested in photography, film, and illustration, so I used my website to share those types of projects, too. I wasn’t born with natural talent, so I was really proud of myself. I was so stoked that I’d managed to make anything that I would unashamedly share it on my site, which would inspire me to do it again and again. It became a feedback loop, and I was gradually getting better over time. I’m 33 now, but I still feel that same type of excitement that I did at 17.
The act of making something is not specific to a certain set of people…every single person on the planet has the ability to create.
I wish I could say that I had a focused, conscientious plan after school…It was simply a series of situations where I found something that interested me and thought, ‘I want to do that next.
