48 Sheet & Papergirl Birmingham launch

Today saw the launch of the eagerly anticipated 48 Sheet Project across billboards in and around Birmingham. Organised by Claire Farrell, today she successfully transformed Birmingham City centre into a walk-through urban art gallery, covering 100 billboards across the city with artwork produced by a troop of local and international artists.

Log Roper a Birmingham based artist, who has collaborated and exhibited with Inkygoodness on numerous occasions, is one of the talented local artists shortlisted for the project. His monumental billboard is made up of painstakingly hand painted panels unveiled on Fazeley Street in Digbeth by Mission print/ub40 studios.

For all the latest news, follow 48 Sheet on facebook or join the conversation on twitter @48Sheet_ using the #48Sheet hash tag. The 48 Sheet launch runs alongside the opening of the Papergirl Exhibition at the Mailbox. A global project first originating Berlin,  Papergirl  is a global project that aims to open the art world into the urban streets of everyday life. Sharing the same sentiment as the 48 Sheet Project, Papergirl Birmingham invites artists to submit artwork for exhibition which are then distributed en mass to an unsuspecting public by lovely Brummies on bicycles!

Sharing a space at the Mailbox, both 48 Sheet and Papergirl Birmingham  join forces on the 28th April, with the bicycle route of Papergirl Birmingham following each 48Sheet bill board spot across the city. You can join the Papergirl Birmingham bike ride too – simply go to their website for info or follow the action from the comfort of your home on twitter @papergirlbhm and facebook.

If you fancy checking out the 100 billboards at your own leisure over the Easter weekend, you can find a very useful interactive map of all the locations providing both walking and cycle routes here.

We’ll be checking out the Papergirl exhibition on the 28th April – see you there!

Papergirl Birmingham opens on 28th April at Mailbox, Birmingham.

EPHEMERA exhibition // Florence Blanchard

Through complex compositions inspired by graffiti, tattoo flash and comic books, Florence Blanchard explores themes of symbolism and science fiction. Her intricate artwork immortalises fleeting thoughts, illustrating the beauty of transiency, whilst questioning the passing of time. Her new exhibition, EPHEMERA gives shape and form to a precarious and fantastical universe. Imagined visions tinged with sensuality and mystery invite us to gather in a transitional moment between dreams and reality.

One of the first female artist in French graffiti, Florence Blanchard resides in New York for 10 years. She adopted the moniker ‘Ema’ in the early 90′s and took part in key american hiphop events. Ema exhibits her work around the world and participated to the underbelly project in New York, TED Women conference à Washington 2010 and Art Basel Miami Beach.

Rue de Beauce is a gallery in an informal setting committed to promoting emerging talent within Contemporary Art and Design. Initiated by Michele Bouhana and Angela di Paolo, artists are regularly invited to exhibit in the living room of a Parisian apartment in the heart of the Marais. Chrissie Abbott – Reflections of Alternate Dimensions @ JaquarShoes

Illustrator Chrissie Abbott storms into JaquarShoes this week with a new installation, utilising modern technology to create interactive interior landscapes. The show entitled ‘Reflections of Alternative Dimensions‘ features interactive artworks built around the concept of an infinity mirror; a simple process that creates a curious psychedelic effect and can be simulated using video, projection or any light source.

Featuring a series of films projected and reflected to form a giant two story moving tapestry, this backdrop houses a series of video feedback and traditional infinity mirrors to present inward facing portals, filling the space with beautiful rippling illustrations.

JaguarShoes Collective have previously collaborated with Chrissie to create a variety of innovative products and external projects. “Chrissie’s work is most often characterised by collaged imaginings, which, in vivid Technicolor, utilise pattern and found images to create a uniquely delicate and fragile aesthetic that often touches on themes of nature and humanism. Her work recalls cult psychedelic artists such as Roger Law and 70’s typographer Roger Dean, but still remains uniquely hers.”

Chrissie Abbott first exhibited as part of JaguarShoes Collective in 2008 at the Old Shoreditch Station. Since then she has achieved huge international acclaim, producing commercial work an array of clients including Virgin, Orange, MTV, Nike, Nylon, The Barbican and The New York Times as well for musical acts such as, Little Boots, Patrick Wolf, Witch and Silver Apples. Her distinctive style of work provoked a c-change in illustration and her style, now much emulated has become intrinsic to the fabric of modern day design. Check out her latest work on her blog.

To mark the show, JaquarShoes are also launching their new printed ceramic ‘Cat’ plate (above) with Chrissie as part of the JaguarShoes Collective homewares range. Visit JaquarShoes big cartel store (after March 22nd) to get yours: http://jaguarshoes.bigcartel.com/

Reflections of Alternate Dimensions – A New Exhibition by CHRISSIE ABBOTT opens on Thursday 22nd March 2012, 7pm -late. Exhibition runs until 28th May 2012 at DreamBagsJaguarShoes  32-36 Kingsland Road, London E2 8DA.

Flatpack Festival, Birmingham

Flatpack 6 is an eclectic jamboree of film; taking over venues all over Birmingham from 14-18 March. Highlights for 2012 include walking tours, live cinema, cult animators, slapstick legends & much more!

Our top pick is a performance by Kit Downes; a young pianist and composer and Lesley Barnes (above); a Glasgow-based illustrator who has made a move into filmmaking of late, including a Belle and Sebastian promo. Last year they came together along with geneticist Adam Rutherford to create Animation/Migration, a DNA-inspired multi-media piece for the Cheltenham Jazz Festival. On Thursday 15th March they’ll be reprising their performance and unveiling a number of new pieces which mix live improvisations and compositions with short films and still images. Click here for tickets.

Full lineup: Kit Downes, piano, Calum Gourlay, bass, James Maddren, drums, James Allsopp, bass clarinet, Lucy Railton, cello. Presented in association with Birmingham Jazz.

A mixtape of hand-drawn, 3D, stop-motion and pixilation, Flatpack’s roundup of new animation explores unfamiliar worlds from the sublime to the ridiculous, where people produce lightbulbs from their mouths (Juan Pablo Zaramella’s Luminaris), a boy attempts to rescue his ungrateful brother from inside a whale (Julia Pott’s Belly, pictured), and talking insects struggle to survive in post-apocalyptic realms (Isamu Hirabayashi’s 663114). It’s not all a surrealist playground though. Graduates Natalie Bettelheim and Sharon Michaeli offer a sweet tale of a mother accepting her baby’s slightly feral ways, and Kangmin Kim’s 38-39°C has a man transported back to his childhood by an intoxicating steam-bath.

Visit the official Flatpack Festival website to purchase tickets for daily events running at various venues around Birmingham throughout the week!
