The Pendulum: It’s About Time

The Pendulum is a monthly publication created by, Chicago based artist, Liana Jegers. Each month, subscribers receive a piece of writing and a postcard on the theme of time. With a different artist and writer being featured every month, you never know what you will get!

Like many recent graduates, Liana felt a bit lost after leaving art school. She knew she wanted to start a monthly publication of some sort, all she needed now was the idea! The eureka moment finally came whilst flicking through a French antique furniture catalogue at work one day and turning to a page filled with beautiful old clocks, with the words “la pendule”.

I thought, “I’ll just draw a clock every month and send it out!” This next part is really corny: I felt so relieved that I had figured out what to do finally and honestly said to myself, “it’s about time,”

With this, The Pendulum was born. Printed by Tan & Loose in Chicago, and now on issue ten, the publication is a collaborative effort, and has already featured an array of extremely talented writers and illustrators including Ed Cheverton, Greta Kovach and Jordan Holtane, as well as Liana’s own work.

The Pendulum is simple in both concept and execution but that doesn’t mean it isn’t brilliant idea. Time is a constant in life and a subject which can be interpreted in many different ways. The pendulum proves this with each issue showing wildly different view points. pieces of writing can ranged from poetry to Amazon reviews.

Liana and her team of extremely talented collaborators have created a thought provoking publication which encourages the reader to reflect on their own feelings about time.

And if your thoughts are any good then why not submit a piece of writing or illustration, The Pendulum is always looking for new contributors. Pieces of writing can be anything from poetry to an Amazon review. A  brilliantly simple idea, beautiful produced, the concept is a stroke of genius. And it’s back story doubles as a piece of advice for graduates – go create! You never know, you might come up with something as fantastic as The Pendulum.
