28 Day Comic Challenge Schedule_12 Nov 2024
Q: I’m fairly new to illustration – can I still join?
Absolutely! We encourage emerging creatives, students and recent graduates to get involved – as well as designers and teachers who are pivoting into illustration. Whether you’re just getting started with your illustration career or you’ve been working as an illustrator for a while and need a boost – the most important thing to know about this 28-Day Comic Illustration Challenge is that this is going to stretch you – and that by committing the time you’ll leave with TWO awesome illustrated comics for your portfolio.
Use this Challenge to complete your first (or next) illustrated comic a little bit faster and with more focus than doing it alone on your own!

Q: When does the creative challenge begin?
Our 28-Day Comic Illustration Challenge kicks off on Monday 11th November at 7.00pm, and runs until Friday 6th December at 12.00pm.

Q: When are the live sessions running?
We’re getting started very soon – here are the dates for your diary!
Key Dates (Zoom + Live Streams)
All Zoom sessions will be recorded and uploaded to Vimeo and made available to watch on replay within 3 hours of each event inside our dedicated 28 Day Comic Illustration Challenge group hosted inside Inkygoodness Collective.
We don’t expect you to attend everything! Choose a selection of workshops and live events to join each week – you can access the recordings for the rest 🙂

Full details on the briefs, deliverables and project deadlines will be provided at the start of the challenge on Monday 11th November.
*Please note – our zoom webinars are watch & listen only; you will not have your video cameras on. All participants will be invited to ask questions and interact with one another in the chat, however this is optional. All sessions are recorded!
Deadline to Enrol: EXTENDED Monday 11th November @ midnight!

Q: What do I need to prepare before the course begins?
No prep required! Just bring yourself and maybe a pen and notebook to take notes during the sessions. Our workshops and courses are super informal – and the 28 Day Challenge will be exactly like that. We always have so much fun learning together – and I can’t wait to meet you all!

Q: Whom is the challenge not suitable for?
This creative challenge is not designed for concept artists, gaming designers or cartoonists. Our 28 Day Challenges are aimed at creatives who want to pursue a career as commercial freelance illustrators working for within editorial and publishing illustration.

Q: What will I be working on?
Artists on the challenge will be guided through the creative process of illustrated comics – from crafting your own brief, to ideation and vignettes, sketches, colour development and final delivery!
Each artist taking part will be crafting their own brief for one comic, alongside working on an editorial comic brief set by our guest art directors.
Our Masterclass artists will be setting you exercises every week to stretch your drawing skills and deepen your understanding of comic illustration as you rediscover the joy of play! Further supported by focused masterclasses on visual storytelling, crafting characters and creative exploration to help you find your voice and develop your illustration practice.

Q: Do I need to be able to use Adobe Fresco or Adobe Creative Suite?
Whilst technical skills are useful, our challenge is open to artists and illustrators who work analog too – so please don’t shy away just because you prefer using pencils, gouache or pen. We’re genuinely very excited to see the diversity and variety of work produced for the challenge!
Q: How much time do I need to set aside?
The live sessions are 60 minutes long throughout November and early December. We’re running a mix of zooms, live talks and daily check-ins with deadlines every week to hit milestones along the way. We recommend allowing between 3-4 hours for each project which will be split across the week. Then maybe an extra hour to implement feedback and apply the learning we’re covering in our weekly workshops. Each zoom session will last for apx 1 hour – 1.5 hours max.

Q: Which art directors are we going to be working with?
We’ve fortunate to have two guest art directors on board for the challenge and each art director will be giving an illustration talk on how they commission for editorial publications alongside providing live feedback, mentoring and support along the way. Our art directors will be announced very soon!

Q: Did I hear you’re offering awards & prizes?
Oh yes! Because, for some of us, the extra nudge of an external reward may be just the push we need to focus or perhaps take the next step we’ve been putting off.
Whatever you’re doing with your creative development right now, it’s too important to let it slide, so we’re incentivising you even further!
Prizes include a six month mentoring award with Inkygoodness founder Lisa Hassell, portfolio crits with our wonderful masterclass speakers, spots on our upcoming Make Your Mark Bootcamp in January 2025, lifetime membership to Inkygoodness Collective and a few surprises! Stay tuned.

Q: How will the winners be selected?
Shortlisted artists will be selected based on their commitment to the challenge and the quality of work they produce for each brief. Winners will be selected by the Inkygoodness team, masterclass speakers and a further four artists will be awarded 1:1 sessions with our art directors.
Q: What if I can’t make the live sessions? Will they be recorded?
Yes! Everything is automatically recorded every week – so no matter if you can attend every session, just a few – or prefer to watch them later – we’ve got you covered! Videos will stay live even after the challenge ends – so you can access the recordings for 12 months.
If you join the 28 Day Comic Illustration Challenge and know in advance that you can’t attend the live sessions, rest assured that you can still submit your questions for me and our incredible speakers!
Please do still join the Challenge even if the timings of the sessions don’t suit your schedule – everyone enrolled will also get access to our private group, hosted inside Inkygoodness Collective where you can join our community and access support and resources. We can guarantee you will get so much out of the experience!
Q: How much does it cost?
Prizes are just one way we’re setting up this Challenge to bring you focus, motivation, and some great support. The other is making it a paid Challenge.
One observation we’ve made over the last six months is that people pay more attention to what they pay for.
And we want you to be set up to take this Challenge seriously. So, we’re charging a one-time fee of £179. You can pay in full or split the cost when you enrol.

Q: I’ve only just found out about the challenge! Can I still join?
Yes absolutely! We are keeping the doors open for a little longer till 13th November but we recommend joining ASAP to ensure you have plenty of time to complete the briefs and get the full challenge experience.
