Wild Fridays: [Fantastic Designers And Where To Find Them]

Illustrator Simon Wild continues his ‘Wild Fridays’ column with this spooky Halloween themed edtion.

I have been a massive fan of Minalima, the graphic design partnership of Miraphora Mina and Eduardo Lima, since their initial collaboration ten years ago when they started designing graphic props for all of the Harry Potter films.  Actually to say I am a massive fan of theirs is a bit of an understatement.

So while visiting the MCM London Comicon on Sunday I had the surprise of my life when I discovered that Minalima were there with their collection of limited edition prints they have been selling since 2012. Every design on show was featured at some stage in one of the eight Harry Potter films and have been so instrumental in shaping the graphic identity of the now famous wizarding world.

Every piece of work is beautiful and visually distinctive in it’s own right, but when also viewed together they share a graphic cohesion which becomes evident in that they were designed for the same fictional world.

Miraphora and Eduardo’s designs are clearly a labour of love, adorned with design features too small to show up on film, but serve to add an authenticity to the work.

I bought the Quidditch World Cup print which will become the first in a collection of many more prints to come.

Warner Bros announced earlier this year that a new trilogy of films is in the works, based on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them; one of the companion books to J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter series. Miraphora told me that her and Eduardo were ‘very much hoping to return to design new work for the forthcoming films.’
