Maker Masterclasses

To compliment the programme we are also hosting three creative maker masterclasses with leading industry designers and illustrators, each focused on a different topic – from surface pattern design and licensing; to working with retailers and launching your first market. Each week we will hear their stories of building a sustainable creative business as an illustrator / maker; alongside some of their closely guarded secrets to thriving in this competitive industry. Expect workshops, talks, Q&A and strategy that you can apply to your fledging creative business.

Maker Masterclass: Build Your Brand with Jessica Smith – 15th June @ 10.30am BST

Jessica Smith is an illustrator and artist currently based in Bath, UK. She loves to create playful, bold and colourful art and has worked on a huge range of projects from packaging and advertising to children’s books. As a creative maker she sells a variety of illustrated products including original paintings, hand crafted ceramics, prints and greeting cards.

Clients include Paperchase, Kate Spade, Adobe, Tombow, Stabilo, Canva, Hardie Grant, Simon and Schuster and many more.

Jessica will be hosting a Build Your Brand Masterclass as part of our 8 week course and sharing her creative maker story so far.

Maker Masterclass: Product Design with Tillie Rose Studio – 14th June @ 6pm BST

Established in Sheffield, UK back in April 2019 Tillie Rose Studio started as a side project. After Tille was furloughed during the Covid pandemic she put all her energy into her creative passion, and nearly 3 years later her business is thriving.

Tillie will be hosting a Product Design for Illustrators Masterclass as part of our 8-week course, guiding our students through the the design and creative process of her best selling stationary products.

Maker Masterclass: Creative Marketing with Liz Harry – 29th June @ 10.30am BST

Liz Harry is a designer-illustrator with a love of hand drawn type and colourful, or what she likes to call ‘colour-fun’ designs. She’s based up North in the musical city of Liverpool, UK.

After many years working within the music industry specialising in art direction and creative consultancy for leading arts, lifestyle and music brands she now runs her Liz Harry Design full time.

Our Creative Marketing for Illustrators Masterclass with Liz will provide key tips and insight on using platforms like Kickstarter to crowdfund product collections and how to sell on Etsy plus an exclusive look at her pre-launch strategy for harnessing the power of social media to market and sell products online. Exciting!

Maker Masterclass: Art Licensing with Jess Miller – 19th July @ 6pm BST

Jess Miller is a Los Angeles based designer, illustrator and educator. Her whimsical style is infused with bright pops of color and layered textures, inspired by nature, retro artwork, and vintage design.

Jess has a background in toy package design and over the years has segued into a career of illustration. She specializes in hand lettering, surface pattern design, and character portraits. Her work has been printed on greeting cards, home goods, tech accessories, book covers, packaging, and more. Clients include CASETiFY, American Greetings, Hallmark and many more.

Jess will be hosting an Art Licensing for Illustrators Masterclass to round off our 8 week course, sharing her expertise and insight on turning your designs into income and tips for breaking into the licensing market.

Illustrated Merchandise runs 5th June – 11th August 2023. Course includes x 10 zoom classes of 1.5 hrs, delivered over 8 weeks + industry Q&A sessions and weekly challenges. Participants will have the option of joining a class on a Wednesday morning at 10.30am BST or Thursday evening at 6pm BST. More details to be provided on booking.

About your teacher

Lisa Hassell is a creative consultant, public speaker, design writer and founder of Inkygoodness, a global community focused on connecting, inspiring and developing artists and creative businesses.

Founded by Lisa Hassell in 2010, Inkygoodness curate events and exhibitions, host regular design talks, run courses, workshops and coaching programmes for emerging and professional creatives. With a focus on personal and professional development for artists and illustrators, Inkygoodness is committed to engaging with emerging talent, sharing knowledge, offering support and cultivating a creative community for artists and illustrators to connect and thrive.

Previously she ran WE ARE GOODNESS, a creative consultancy and illustration agency representing a diverse roster of international artists.
